Shelagh Hetreed is an educator and tutor of art, specialising in Batik. Shelagh is a tutor for a range of community batik courses at Bath College, working in the towns and villages in the Somer Valley (near Bath). She is also a visiting lecturer for PGCE Art students at Bath Spa University. She taught art in secondary and special school for many years as well as practicing art teacher professional days across the UK for ‘Creative Education’. She has been running ‘Batik Exploration’ workshops for several years in and around Bath and now in her own purpose built studio at Paulton Engine. She has run workshops as part of art trails in Bath and Midsomer Norton. She has just delivered a workshop in wax resist for a pre school of 3 and 4 year olds, using the imagery of Indonesian and African sarongs as inspiration. Currently, her maturest student is 89 and her youngest is 3! Shelagh’s passion is in ‘unlocking the creative potential’ of everyone who comes on her workshops and finds the ‘no good at art’ declarations her favourite challenge! At last Shelagh is putting aside the time to produce her own work again, being fascinated by representing sharp contrast images in batik, currently stone carvings and flora and fauna.
